Here are a couple of recent recordings I’ve made at Christ the King.
From February, Sarabanda from J. S. Bach’s D-minor Partita ( hi-fi and lo-fi), truncated at the front due to technical difficulties in the sound system that morning
From August, Brahms’s Scherzo from the “FAE” Sonata ( hi-fi and lo-fi)
Enjoy!

I’ve been a delinquent blogger. Sorry about that.
As a peace offering I’ll link up two recordings I made in the last couple months. Both are live performances from worship services at our church: “Meditation (Psalm 19)” ( hi-fi or lo-fi) and “This Is Food Indeed” ( hi-fi or lo-fi).
Best to you and yours in 2007.

My record collection is not enormous, but I do own multiple recordings of some of my favorite music. Today I’ll give you two 25-second clips of a single piece performed by two different musicians. The recordings are separated by more than 50 years, but the musical effects are light-years apart.

Our church is officially cutting-edge: we are podcasting. If that buzzword leaves you nonplussed—or even if it doesn’t—download Apple’s free iTunes software and fire it up. Then click on and search for “Christ the King.” A new sermon is posted every week, and it will be automatically downloaded for you to listen to at […]

My love of Jazz at Oberlin is no secret. This record continues to pay dividends after numerous hearings. I recently discovered in it a handful of classical music quotations hidden in several of Paul Desmond’s alto saxophone solos.
In 1953 jazz was not widely considered an art form worthy of study in American universities and conservatories. […]

Our oldest, who just started kindergarten, received a phone call last night from a young lady in his class. Sounds to me like Valentina wants a valentino.

Last night I made a demo track (Windows Media Player required) of “Meditation (Psalm 19)”. It really doesn’t sound too bad considering I recorded this in my livingroom with a computer headset mic I bought for $15 at Walmart.
Maybe I’ll start moonlighting as a competitor to Lance’s slick little operation. I’ll call my new business […]

I am outraged! My “buddy” Bill has remixed the recording I made of Rachmaninov’s “Vocalise.” If my performance made good old Sergei roll over in his grave, then Bill has exhumed the corpse, dressed it up like Ziggy Stardust, and propped it up at the keyboard—à la Weekend at Bernie’s—in front of shrieking Cheap Trick […]

You may or may not have heard our audio welcome message that’s generated by the Nuance Vocalizer text-to-speech engine. Since I created the greeting in English some months ago they’ve added a Latin American Spanish voice, so you can now hear the greeting in our household’s second language.
Although I wouldn’t yet voluntarily listen to a […]

My latest recording made at church is now available. Poor Mr Rachmaninov is doubtless doing backflips in his grave because we had to cut the B section of his “Vocalise” here to meet the time constraints of an offertory. Does racing through the giving in 2¼ minutes say anything about how much we Presbyterians put in […]
