Meeting the master

Dave Brubeck came to town in December and I went to hear him. Great concert, and Congregation Beth Yeshurun’s sanctuary was not a bad venue. The first half was the Quartet (Bobby Militello, alto sax; Michael Moore, bass; Randy Jones, drums) playing a set of standards. The guys were all in fine form, Brubeck included. […]

Heroes

I’ve written about heroes before. While visiting my hometown over Christmas I visited one of my favorite high school teachers, John Randall. I learned that he’s fighting inoperable lung cancer and may not have long to live. His and his wife Dawn’s courage, and the use they’re making of the time he has left, are […]

No pets please: we’re skittish

It isn’t news to those of you who know Nils and me well: we aren’t pet people. That might be an understatement. We don’t even want a goldfish. I’ve often said I’d rather have another baby than a pet, and I don’t make claims like that lightly.
You pet lovers will be amused to hear that, […]

Do the ’do

My application hasn’t been accepted yet, but I’m joining Greg’s No-Hair Club for Men.

The T-shirt is Photoshopped instead of silkscreened, but hey. Maybe I should look into having some of these made as promotional items for the Club ….

Give me carbohydrates and then give me death

About three months ago I started publicly charting my blood-sugar levels. Since then I updated two charts daily in order to track a single measure: how well I’m doing at managing my Type-1 diabetes. This got me thinking about how to quantify blood-sugar control in one number instead of two or more.
If you’re diabetes chic […]

Presenting at the Houston Ruby and Rails user group

A Houston-area user group for Ruby and Rails is getting off the ground. In our May meeting I’ll be giving a presentation on the Trestle Generator open-source project I started a few months ago. It’s an extension to the Ruby on Rails web application development framework.
Should be a good time. By geek standards, that is.

Happy Birthday, Wolfie!

Today is the 250th birthday of Wolfgang Amadé Mozart. In honor of him I offer you this silent, poor-man’s video of me playing a piece by a composer whose work he admired and promoted, namely, J. S. Bach.

That’s not a goatee I’m wearing. I’m picking my nose with a microphone.
This picture was taken at my company’s […]

A relic from aviation’s golden age

The old Houston Municipal Airport, an art-deco structure that was abandoned in 1978, is being refurbished as an aviation museum.
The photo at the right reminds me of Ingrid Bergman with Humphrey Bogart on the tarmac at the end of Casablanca.
Listen to a Houston Public Radio piece about this that I heard this morning, or visit […]

But 43 things I do: forgetting what lies in my organizer …

I just bumped into an interesting social software site. 43 Things is to your life goals and to-do list what Flickr is to your photos. Type a description of something you want to accomplish and you can see how it relates to the goals and experiences of tens of thousands of other users. You can […]

Scimitar in purse

My favorite corporate identity pundit, Tony Spaeth, probably wouldn’t approve of the Samaritan’s Purse logo. But that’s not the reason why I wrote to them today.
