Geeks blowing off steam

When was the last time your boss stepped into your office and said, “Get over here and give me some pushups”? Mine did today, and it wasn’t because I’d horked something up (although that would be a reasonable guess).
We just put the finishing touches on a particularly difficult product release. A lot of pressure has […]

My Faustian pact with the devil

After some soul-searching I just signed up with Google AdSense.
Henceforth [Nils’s] life was filled with comfort and luxury, but marked by excess and perversion. Everything was within his grasp: elegant clothing, fine wines, sumptuous food, beautiful women—even Helen of Troy and the concubines from the Turkish sultan’s harem. He became the most famous astrologer in […]

The little songwriter and the little maestro

Fair warning: this entry will read like an obnoxious Christmas letter that describes how all the children are above average.
Last weekend our kindergartener told me he wanted to write a song. He had already come up with a title. So I helped him explore the theme of the title and coaxed lines out of him […]

In memoriam Ed Clowney

I learned this morning that our former pastor, Ed Clowney, died yesterday afternoon at the age of 87. I’m saddened by this loss to his family and friends and to all of Christendom; a great multitude across the globe loved this man dearly. But I’m also overjoyed for him personally, as he’s enjoying at this […]

He’s an animal, man!

Our friend Nathan will be playing the title role in an upcoming production of Bernard Pomerance’s Tony award-winning play, The Elephant Man. I’m really pumped about this. I’ll be at the March 20 matinée; if you’re going then, too, let me know.
Update: We ended up both going Friday night, and it was every bit as […]

Scared witless

Araceli went out of town this weekend on a church women’s retreat so I convened some movie-lover buddies to watch something our wives wouldn’t be interested in. Mark commissioned an Artisan Cakes dessert for the event: dark chocolate garnished with white-chocolate truffles and a blood-red raspberry sauce.
It lived up to his boast: “killer.”

No disguise for authenticity

We had a great time Friday night at Judy’s record release party held at The Vintage Bar. Her CD, Fiction in Disguise, is a really good piece of work. Friday’s performances were unplugged—her home turf, and she sounded great. By contrast, Fiction’s production has shades of U2, and it rocks!
My buddy Howard opened for Judy, […]

What do your parents want for Christmas?

At our middle son’s preschool this morning a small poster was hanging outside the door. Apparently the children had been asked to report what their parents wanted for Christmas. The list of responses was excruciatingly funny. Our little guy responded that “Mommy wants a new pink dress. Daddy wants a new light saber.”
Merry Christmas, everyone!

Sitting Star, noble son of Dreamer-Minstrel

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, or in this case, the arrow from the bow. Our eldest is in kindergarten, and this week they learned about Native Americans. Their wonderful teacher went so far as to give them all Indian names based on some of their more salient characteristics. Our son came home […]

Teaching children a lucrative trade

I may have contributed to the delinquency of a minor. Not just any minor, but two of my own sons. I recently read the folktale “Stone Soup” to the older kids. Let’s be frank: this story is an effective way to teach youngsters the Spanish prisoner confidence trick. Now, it’s no secret that I happen […]
