Catching up with the music

Here are a couple of recent recordings I’ve made at Christ the King.

From February, Sarabanda from J. S. Bach’s D-minor Partita ( hi-fi and  lo-fi), truncated at the front due to technical difficulties in the sound system that morning
From August, Brahms’s Scherzo from the “FAE” Sonata ( hi-fi and  lo-fi)

Enjoy!

Pirates and hunters

With two kids in school, and two at home, life feels calmer in the morning hours … more conducive to conversations about life goals. Our four-year-old very seriously posed a conundrum different from others I have faced: “Mommy, when I’m a grownup, do you want me to be a pirate or a hunter?”
Funny, neither of […]

Meeting the master

Dave Brubeck came to town in December and I went to hear him. Great concert, and Congregation Beth Yeshurun’s sanctuary was not a bad venue. The first half was the Quartet (Bobby Militello, alto sax; Michael Moore, bass; Randy Jones, drums) playing a set of standards. The guys were all in fine form, Brubeck included. […]

Happy New Year!

I’ve been a delinquent blogger. Sorry about that.
As a peace offering I’ll link up two recordings I made in the last couple months. Both are live performances from worship services at our church: “Meditation (Psalm 19)” ( hi-fi or  lo-fi) and “This Is Food Indeed” ( hi-fi or  lo-fi).
Best to you and yours in 2007.

Give me carbohydrates and then give me death

About three months ago I started publicly charting my blood-sugar levels. Since then I updated two charts daily in order to track a single measure: how well I’m doing at managing my Type-1 diabetes. This got me thinking about how to quantify blood-sugar control in one number instead of two or more.
If you’re diabetes chic […]

Play it again, Sam, and with a little more water, please

Our six-year-old, having taken piano lessons for some seven months now, considers himself quite the little maestro. He loves the damper pedal. Since he only measures 43 inches tall, he isn’t able to reach it without standing up. (We finally invested in a piano pedal extending platform so his posture won’t go down the tubes). […]

Happy Birthday, Wolfie!

Today is the 250th birthday of Wolfgang Amadé Mozart. In honor of him I offer you this silent, poor-man’s video of me playing a piece by a composer whose work he admired and promoted, namely, J. S. Bach.

That’s not a goatee I’m wearing. I’m picking my nose with a microphone.
This picture was taken at my company’s […]

Death by congregational singing

Our church is putting on a “Greatest Hits Night”—an evening of live music that was heard in our worship services during the year. It’s a time of fellowship, food, fun, and worship for the church. It’s also an opportunity for members to invite friends and family from outside the church who might find an evening […]

Shameless self-promotion

West University Methodist Church has invited me to perform in the last of six concerts that they organized this year to celebrate the renovation of their sanctuary and the installation of a new pipe organ. It is a wonderful concert space, and the instrument is amazing.
Prominent Houston organist Robert Bennett and I will play well-known […]

Playing notes vs. making music

My record collection is not enormous, but I do own multiple recordings of some of my favorite music. Today I’ll give you two 25-second clips of a single piece performed by two different musicians. The recordings are separated by more than 50 years, but the musical effects are light-years apart.
