Crying “uncle”—and running to Uncle Ronald

The last 3½ weeks have not been the easiest time for Casa Jonsson. During the last weekend of January we were at our kindergartener’s first piano recital when our newborn had what appeared to be some sort of seizure. We spent the next three days in the neonatal ICU ruling out seizures and heart problems […]

Death by congregational singing

Our church is putting on a “Greatest Hits Night”—an evening of live music that was heard in our worship services during the year. It’s a time of fellowship, food, fun, and worship for the church. It’s also an opportunity for members to invite friends and family from outside the church who might find an evening […]

Mel’s at it again

Maybe it’s just me, but did anyone else cringe upon seeing the poster for Mel Gibson’s upcoming movie due out next summer?
Think about it: a movie with the dubious name “Apocalypto” from the director of The Passion of the Christ, and the tag line reads, “When the end comes, not everyone is ready to go.” […]

A relic from aviation’s golden age

The old Houston Municipal Airport, an art-deco structure that was abandoned in 1978, is being refurbished as an aviation museum.
The photo at the right reminds me of Ingrid Bergman with Humphrey Bogart on the tarmac at the end of Casablanca.
Listen to a Houston Public Radio piece about this that I heard this morning, or visit […]

Not much point

I’m not a rabid Woody Allen fan, but I do enjoy a lot of his work. Having just watched the trailer for his forthcoming movie, Match Point, I can say that there are only two possible conclusions to draw. Either he didn’t even look at the trailer that the studio produced before it went live, […]

His life in movies

I just found out that a friend of Casa Jonsson is blogging. Again. (We’ve linked to weblogs of his in the past and they fizzled. But hope springs eternal.) I asked him why I hadn’t heard about this project that has been underway since June. He wants to remain anonymous.
I’m linking to him anyway, but […]

But 43 things I do: forgetting what lies in my organizer …

I just bumped into an interesting social software site. 43 Things is to your life goals and to-do list what Flickr is to your photos. Type a description of something you want to accomplish and you can see how it relates to the goals and experiences of tens of thousands of other users. You can […]

Second-guessing

Now that the decision is made I’ve learned about a new option that may upset my carefully stacked apple cart: Peerflix. It’s Netflix meets eBay. I don’t have a DVD library to speak of, but trading movies with a Netflix-like broker in between looks like a cool idea. (Via Richard Tallent.)

Self-portrait

I just wasted a few minutes with Portrait Illustration Maker (via Ned Batchelder) and here’s the result. I think I came out looking more like an animé Richie Cunningham than like myself.

Scared witless

Araceli went out of town this weekend on a church women’s retreat so I convened some movie-lover buddies to watch something our wives wouldn’t be interested in. Mark commissioned an Artisan Cakes dessert for the event: dark chocolate garnished with white-chocolate truffles and a blood-red raspberry sauce.
It lived up to his boast: “killer.”
