Diabetes wars: news from the front

Inhalable insulin is in the headlines these days. Ho hum. Some people may benefit from it but I personally would rather continue poking myself with needles four times a day than breathe the stuff.

What I do find very exciting is that Abbott reportedly claims this is the year they’ll release the first mass-market continuous blood glucose monitor.

ABBOTT 4Q05—Overachieves on $1.0 billion sales milestone: Abbott reported January 25 its 4Q05 earnings, highlighting that Abbott Diabetes Care has exceeded the $1.0 billion milestone mark in revenue. The company’s remarks on the Navigator (continuous monitor) indicated a very positive outlook on this device, suggesting it’s pleased with the clinical trial results, now finished. The product is expected to be approved and launched later this year.

The FreeStyle Navigator looks as though it could significantly improve my quality of life. As wimpy as it sounds, I freely confess that pricking my fingers six times a day is my least favorite part of having type-1 diabetes. I end up jabbing the same nerves over and over again despite efforts to rotate through both sides of all ten fingers. It stinks.

By the way, I’ve started publicly charting (courtesy of Bellygraph) my daily victories and defeats on the diabetes battlefield in an effort to boost my motivation. I’ll keep this on the sidebar of the Casa Jonsson front page, along with charts of my weekday water intake and Bible reading, for as long as I can stand the humiliation.
