Storm status
It was another full day today working with my father-in-law to cover windows on his house and mine. Now I remember why I play with computers rather than work for a living: I’m sunburned and dead tired.
As we finished up our work this afternoon the breeze got stronger and the sky began to take on the appearance of neapolitan ice cream, only less appetizing. I saw more than one teenager taking video footage of boarded-up houses and trees in the gusting wind, either for fun or for some sort of school assignment on suburban hysteria. For a brief quarter of an hour I thought we had begun hearing from Rita in earnest because a good number of small branches came off trees in our neighborhood. But the mild violence left as quickly as it came. All is quiet for now.
I should say, all is quiet outside the house. The three Jonsson boys are camping out with us at their grandparents’ house, and they’re hyper. I’ve just got them into bed long past their bedtime, but they show no signs of falling asleep. They prefer to sleep on a sleeping bag on the floor underneath their bed, a blanket draped over the edge to form a cave.
I have no idea whether Rita will permit us a full night’s sleep tonight or rudely awaken us in a few hours. I’ve been reading and enjoying SciGuy’s weblog, and he’s laid his money on a midnight landfall.
Until later, if our power doesn’t fizzle …
