N.J.

Apologies for the tardiness of this reply. Yes, you are right the March 2, 1953 concert at Finney Chapel on the Oberlin campus was well over two hours. What Jazz at Oberlin tries to capture are the highlights of the evening and the enthusiasm of the audience. The masters are secure in our vault, and I have passed along your interest in a volume 2, so hopefully we can schedule it in the future.

regards,
Rikka

I applaud Fantasy for publishing the Brubeck Quartet’s performance at Oberlin in 1953. This is a supremely memorable recording and well worthy of preservation for generations to come.

I am disappointed, however, that less than 40 minutes of this event are available in any format. My understanding is that the performance lasted over two hours. What is the status of the masters? Can jazz lovers hold out hope of ever being able to hear all of what the Oberlin audience heard?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

If you love this record as I do, please express your interest in their releasing the whole performance. end of entry

  1. What is the secret of jazz? It’s on my list of things to do before I die: “discover the secret of jazz”.

I have an early theory, although it needs some work. I also recall a quote (from L. Armstrong?), something like “Man, if you have to ask, you’ll never know!”.

  2. I have a suggestion to help you in your quest: buy Jazz at Oberlin.
