Because MT can’t protect itself™
Alert the ACLU. This weblog is stooping to censorship. No, this has nothing to do with my ideological similarities to totalitarians.
I’m as idealistic as the next “wine-sipping, cheese-chomping yuppie liberal who’s not rich enough to live in the Rice area.”† For over a year I’ve left the comments feature open on all my past weblog entries, thinking that nice people might straggle into the discussion months after I wrote something and have something worthwhile to say. But I began to wonder why kind visitors started offering me, out of the goodness of their hearts, free trials of various prescription drugs, especially those intended to relieve certain—how can I put it delicately?—masculine ailments. Eventually, after the comment spam had degenerated to abject soullessness, I tired of deleting dozens of ghoulish comments and got a hunch that maybe censorship isn’t such a bad concept after all.
MT truly can’t protect itself. MT-Blacklist was working for a while, but now I’ve closed the comments on my older entries. My longer-term strategy is to move to a different weblog engine that will allow me less painfully to screen comments. I’m currently rebuilding Casa Jonsson with WordPress in belated honor of our one-year bloggiversary. More on that later.
Update: These days I’m ahead of the comment spammers. I’m probably still going to switch to WordPress, though.

I feel your pain. Welcome to the WordPress fold. I’ve been playing with it for a few months now. Let me know if I can help.
I may take you up on that, Mike. So far my biggest problem was coaxing mod_rewrite not to mangle my pretty WordPress URLs. That’s taken care of but I have a few more hurdles to clear.
