Bill Gates publicly admits “Whidbey” is vaporware
Watching the video (Windows Media Player required) of Bill Gates’s keynote at VSLive! San Francisco, I was astonished to hear him tell conference attendees that the highly anticipated next version of Microsoft Visual Studio is an empty promise.

“(Hmm … maybe I shouldn’t have said that—Ballmer might try to arrange my death in a squash court ‘accident.’)”
Gates’s exact words were (and I quote), “As we move Visual Studio forward, the next major version is called Visual Studio 2005. Some of you have probably heard that referred to as the would-be version—that’s the code name.”

“(D’ho! Here comes Ballmer now, charging up the center aisle!) Guess that about wraps it up for the keynote. Look at the time! Gotta run!”
Oh, wait. I’m sorry. I guess Gates said “ ‘Whidbey’ version,” not “would-be version.” Whew.
