“Here I stand” with two famous Germans and a Soviet mass murderer
Thanks to a link from Sarah, I now know which Christian theologian’s personality (allegedly) most closely resembles my own: Martin Luther. This surprised me initially, but now that I think about it, it does seem to make some sense; the six-question test, for what it’s worth, evaluates personality and not theology.
Test yourself and let me know how it comes out.
As long as you’re navel-gazing, you might as well visit The Political Compass to find out how your politics (purportedly) compare to those of certain famous and infamous historical leaders. My results (+0.38 on the economic scale, +0.51 on the social scale) came out almost dead-center on the two-dimensional chart, and closest to Gerhard Schröder. Weird.
But The Compass thinks I’m well to the right (economically) and upwards (more authoritarian) of the blogosphere. Shocked! I’m shocked!
I just learned that The Compass has a competitor. I tried it, and my results (+2.5412 economically, –1.3622 socially) are fairly near dead-center, but also put me in Josef Stalin’s neighborhood. A flattening comparison. Maybe Araceli used to think I hung the moon, but now she’ll think I would’ve hanged the moon if we’d had the budget for a space program.
Before you vow never again to have anything to do with the vile likes of me, take the test yourself and see if you like the bedfellows it says you have.
Theologically, I am Augustine, which explains why “everyone loves [me] and wants to talk to [me] and hear [my] views” — at least they will once the results of this test are widely known. Politically, I am off the chart … literally. The first test put me in the lower right-hand quadrant, where it lists absolutely no one. Isn’t there anyone on the spectrum seeking to abolish taxes and increase funding to the arts? My numbers were: Economic Left/Right 1.12, Social Libertarian/Authoritarian –1.90. The second test put me on the same line between Stalin and Tony Blair where you found yourself, but my numbers were: +1.62 and +0.66. Of course, I answered a few questions knowing that my context for interpreting them was rather different than the author’s. Otherwise, how could a theologically Augustinian, confessed Calvinist come out smelling like a centrist? :)
I’ll start calling you Bishop of Hippo. Seems like a fitting thing for a “wild boar in the Lord’s vineyard” to do.
That’s SAINT Bishop of Hippo to you, Martin. :)
I am close to Maggie Thatcher, which is no surprise … I’m a helpless right-winger, but not as “idealistic” as I would have thought …
I wish they had an American version of this compass — folks like Reagan, Clinton, Nader, etc.

Agreed—I’m not informed enough about politics and politicians in the U.K. to have the names mean much to me.
I’m a Martin Luther too. Good grief. This is a man who would have lived in squalor had it not been for his wife. Now what are we to do?
:) Love you.
